  • Explore the Starship Enterprise with Apple Vision Pro

Dear editor and readers: the word that Gene Roddenberry probably meant to use is "phonemes," not phenoms (superstars / phenomenons).  Since it's been quoted, he either misspoke at the time, or was misquoted by the person who wrote it at the original Deadline article.  Phonemes are the basic units of speech.

Can you please correct this with an [sp] mark?

  • Twelve South AirFly Pro review: Boost your in-flight audio quality

This also works great for walking tours where you would normally wear a receiver around your neck and plug in wired earbuds to hear the tour guide.  This system is very very common, especially among European river cruise operators.  The AirFly allowed us to tuck the receiver into our bag and listen on our AirPods Pro instead.  With ANC enabled, it was much easier to hear the guide speaking amid the noise of the city!

  • How Apple's software engineering teams manage and test new operating system features ahead...

Now take a deep dive in the folder /System/Library/FeatureFlags and do a follow-up report.  There is a file here called "Livability" as well as a bunch of project code names with tags like "DevelopmentPhase" and "DisclosureRequired."

If you want to mess around in this folder, it's protected by SIP and it's also in the "sealed volume" area of the system, so at minimum you'll need to disable SIP and break the seal in order to make changes.

  • iPhone 14 may gain 30W fast charging

I’m confused. If “The iPhone and newer support 20W fast charging, why does Apple say that their 35 W chargers are compatible with the iPhone 8 and newer models?
The device limits the charger if the charger has excess capacity.  The charger's max rate is 35W, but the charger and the device negotiate for the expected charging rate, which is 20W.  FYI, the USB-C spec raises the default voltage from 5V to 20V, so 20W = 20V x 1A.

  • Continued iOS 14 security updates were meant to be temporary, Apple says

I support thousands of Windows computers and hundreds of macOS computers as my job. I would never use Windows personally. It's even a double-edged sword in the enterprise due to the manageability, but its a security nightmare.
I have worked in environments with many thousands of Windows and Mac computers.  The Windows admins have far more BS to deal with: driver packs, KBs and hotfixes, quality rollups, cumulative rollups, etc.  Patching is a major headache on Windows, especially with how I've seen it work in SCCM.  If you want an 'easy' solution, be prepared to pay a lot of money for a third party product, or else you're using something like Ninite for a small/medium office.  On the Mac, there are so many awesome developers who have created whole patching solutions FOR FREE and posted them on Github with excellent documentation.  Nudge is an example of one designed to encourage users to install their macOS updates in a timely manner.  Even a halfway competent admin with some scripting chops can make sense of most of the offerings and roll them out quickly, and the developers are motivated by Apple's mantra of making great user experiences.

  • Reddit app 'Apollo' is shutting down over Reddit's expensive API prices

    chutzpah said:

That's the point.  He's on the hook for $250k of subscription refunds, but that pales in comparison to the $20 million he'd have to pay Reddit in API fees if he were to try and keep going and honour the subscription service.  He'd understandly rather give the refunds.

I guess all the Reddit channel black outs achieved diddly squat.
You do realize that the subreddit protests haven't happened yet, and they're starting this week, right?  All the announcements have said January 12-14, but some of the largest subreddits, including /r/Videos, have made the decision to go dark permanently unless Reddit changes its tactics.

Otherwise, starting Monday, thousands of subreddits—including some of the top default subs like funny, pics, science, and more—are either locking or going completely private.

The CEO of reddit did an AMA yesterday.  It didn't go well.  If someone was considering an investment in reddit, Huffman's mercurial responses and doubling-down on false accusations against Apollo's developer should give them pause.

  • Apple Vision Pro can be used in public, but mind your manners

What would be the moniker for these? iHoles? Pro-holes? V-holes?

Back in 2012, Google Glass was making waves as people started wearing them in public.  They got labeled "glassholes," and some establishments would ban people from wearing them because the glasses were constantly recording everything without the other party's consent.  If Apple's AR product takes off, you might have to call them "ARssholes."

  • Indian sends labor officials to grill Foxconn over hiring practices

    HEADLINE ERROR.

It currently reads: "Indian sends labor officials to grill Foxconn over hiring practices"

    It should read: "India sends..."

Otherwise, the reader is left to wonder why a single Indian was sent to grill Foxconn, and which one?
