  • Apple Watch saves Calgary woman from rapist

The author must not know the definition of "rape kit"...

The previous, deleted post called for a re-write of the headline, which I think is appropriate.

ETA: The headline of the cited CBC articles is "Apple Watch likely saved Calgary woman from man who had bag of rape tools" which correctly describes the situation.
I was baffled by the headline too.

I'd also add that this story doesn't seem to have much to do with the Apple Watch. An iPhone or the cheapest feature phone that fell to hand would have served to send a text.
From the linked CBC article: “ She tried to look around without moving her head and noticed her phone was gone. Anna realized she was wearing an Apple Watch and managed to text her boyfriend, who called 911”.

So, there was no iPhone or cheap feature phone that could “fall to hand”.

  • AirTag, Find My key to recovery of lost wallet on NYC subway

“  If I didn't have the tag, there's no way I would have gotten that wallet back”
Cool story—and I’m glad he got his wallet back—but “no way” is a stretch. The idiots in the booth could easily have opened the wallet and found an ID and looked him up...

Not necessarily. I lost my car keys and couldn’t find them for 2 years when I got a call from a local laundromat a few months ago.  The keys had been sitting in a drawer right behind the front counter for the entire 2 years until a new employee saw them. They had a security tag on them where anyone can throw them in a post office box for a free return, and my phone number on a tag on the keys as well. So, even with that sort of identification on my keys, they sat in that drawer for 2 years. I probably would have been able to find them the same day had I had an AirTag on them.

    Bug?

Just updated to WatchOS 10 and I now can’t swipe to my other watch faces. I can see them on my iPhone Watch app, and change them on there but can’t on my watch.

    Anyone else seeing this?
You have to tap and hold and then swipe right or left to get to each watch face.

  • Photo reveals Apple's plastic wrap-free iPhone 13 packaging

I do like putting the beautiful Apple boxes on display in my office (joking called a mini Apple Store with a shelving unit devoted to them). I hope they don't get dinged up too bad during shipping. That is a truly tiny amount of plastic to save on an extremely expensive product. I am all for treating the environment well but when any good idea is taken too far it becomes fanaticism.
I’m not so sure they are saving a truly tiny amount of plastic. From Apple: “This year we removed the plastic wrap from the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro case, saving 600 tons of plastic.” That’s a hell of a lot of plastic not going into the environment.

Yeah, it looks like Apple changed quite a few of the default behaviors. I was as puzzled by the way swipe to change the watch face works as Chr15h was. The good news is no more inadvertent changes to the watch face. I also noticed that I used to be able to show the Control Center by swiping up. Now I have to press the side button, which means I'll have to figure out how to scroll through the list of running apps. This seems like a significant change to the user interaction model and user interface. I'm sure it will be better once I get over the learning curve. I like what I'm seeing so far.
Double-click the Digital Crown to go to Recent Apps.

Turn the Digital Crown from any watch face to bring up the apps you have chosen to be in the Stack.

I have the Apple tv remote version before this one and absolutely hate it. Mostly the touch surface which is incredibly finicky. Those that have used both, is this one much better?

It's much worse.  This doesn't even give you a touch surface.

The touch remote isn't ergonomic, but neither is this one.

This one is a step backward.
Of course it has a touch surface. Just make sure it is turned on in Settings.

Yeah, that's fixable. But the annoyingly loud click of the buttons are not. With the old remote, I could quietly adjust the volume. That's over.

And why the hell did they move the play/pause button up one? They should have left it and the Siri button where they were and put the mute button on the side.

And speaking of the mute button. Really? Why would you mute rather than pause whatever you are streaming? You'd just have to scrub back to the point where you muted. That button is absolutely useless to me and until muscle memory learns that they moved the play/pause button up one, I will be muting the damn system by accident.

This remote is better in many ways, (it feels great, I love cutting on/off my ATV box/Receiver/TV with one button) but is so baseline annoying in others.

There are times when I want to view what is on screen without hearing the sound. And just turning the volume down to zero takes a long time compared to the immediacy of a mute button. Also, if one has children, sometimes it is useful for them to watch the TV with the volume muted for mom or dad’s sake. Again without having to wait 30 seconds for the volume to go down to zero.

The mute button is very much welcomed.
