A normal country would impeach this clown. He is using tariffs and tariff threats like a dictator who believes he answers to no-one. This is what you get when you elect a born rich billionaire property developer to the office of President. The big surprise under the big tent is how ineffective Congress is and how Republicans behave more like Trump's entourage than elected officials.
It's also interesting to ponder the implications of imposing a tariff on a specific product designed by a specific American company but manufactured abroad, while not imposing the same tariff on competing products from, say a Korean company. What exactly is such a policy supposed to be accomplishing?
Destroying American companies for the benefit of Vlad and other foreign leaders who give you planes and buy your crypto.
Isn’t such specific company focus for a tariff illegal? Not that Trump wouldn’t have “his DOJ” go after Apple alone with some made up charge. Tim’s investment of his time and money to feed the king’s ego has been a waste.

Exactly!
Reading through this thread I was thinking about the very same issue right when I read your post.
It just makes no sense to punish Apple and single it out.
I fear this may be some form of mental rambling that flashed across his mind and before he had time to really think it through, he was 'Truthing' it to the wider world.
Not sure how Lutnick or Bessent will be able to spin this one.
Or will this 25% get 'paused' too?
On another level, claiming Tim Cook was made aware of this some time ago does put him in a bit of a predicament. Perhaps he simply ignored Trumps petitions.
Even if Apple plans to build phones in the US this is almost impossible. Where should people and equipment come from? China!?
If is Apple plans to assemble iPhones in the US. Where to the equipment en people come from? China!?
A huge percentage of the components are made abroad.
Orange Convict Don is living in a fantasy world.
He screws people an companies.
He must be chased out of the White House ASAP.
In addition, the EU has got fire breathing on them in a major way.
This is all talk at the moment. As we have seen, Trump has a playbook. He will make a strong demand. If there is no effort or negotiation, he will execute on that promise. Then, when stubborn parties have softened, he will negotiate again, or pivot as needed. This administration is very agile and can turn on a dime. And with Scott bessent factoring so heavily, it’s going to turn out well.
Trump got criticized for helping apple with exemptions and he will surely get criticized for this. Dude can’t win with some people.
Trump’s playbook is to do some odd public posturing, panic when it all backfires, look for an off ramp and then completely capitulate. It is exactly what happened whit China. He created complete chaos with his trade war, got mad when people pointed out the chaos and China refused to even negotiate unless their demands were met. The Trump administration met 100% of China’s demands to negotiate and then got nothing in return. I can’t wait to see how the parade of incompetence handles this one and how the Cult attempts to reconcile it all as some sort of win.
Maybe Apple should just let Trump issue the 25% tariffs and let people in the US pay 25% more for Apple products. This situation would make Trump less popular and perhaps get some Republicans to act responsibly and shutdown Trump’s current dictatorship a-la-executive order…signed with what looks like a fraudster’s polygraph result
We deserve the leadership we have—from both isles. You all seem to think there are only 2 choices and until you realize neither party has your best interest and the only interests they serve is AIPAC/zios and billionaire class, it will only get worse. (watch, some zip will complain and I’ll be moderated. Meanwhile, the evidence is plain as day but you all continue to bury your heads in the sand.
Yeah cool but until first past the post voting is replaced with rank-choice voting, there will only be two viable parties. Plenty of youtube videos explaining why this happens. Rank-choice voting is required to open up third parties as viable choices and not wasted votes. (tho with the likes of nutjobs like RFK running third party that wasn’t much better)
When is this fat imbecile going to be stopped? He's trying to single-handedly destroy the US and its businesses, while making as many people as possible suffer, just to appease his inner pschyopath.
Whether his rationale is mental illness, utter stupidity and ignorance, or malevolence, has stopped being relevant. He needs to be stopped asap, and his issues can be addressed later.
Search for 'Mar-a-largo accord' and you'll see where this is coming from (philosophically) ... and probably find tons of real experts analysis, who think this is a very bad idea.
The reasons given that prevent iPhones from being made in the US - “there is not the required skilled labor, there is not a supply of the rare minerals needed, and there are no facilities.” - can be dealt with, but would take years to implement. It’s not impossible, but the overnight change the Orange Man wants can’t happen. Does he really not understand this?
One decade to two decades of work to make it happen essentially thru 2 1/2 to 5 American administrations. And it doesn’t matter who’s in power because long range planning has not been a strength of the American political system in a long time if ever.
No problem, just add 25% to the price in the USA and let customers know why. The Orange one will soon back track.
Yes! Just like when it was claimed that Amazon would expose tariff figures next to product prices. Trump and Whitehouse went apeshit calling it "hostile and political act." Also, where would that tariff money go?
Please excuse the large bold type. I do this because I suspect I'm not the only one who has trouble reading tiny font that's the default font for posts.

iPhones made in the U.S.? Trump spent his business career shilling for casinos and luxury condos with his name on them. He knows nothing about modern manufacturing, particularly that of high-tech items. They're made all over the world and the final assembly. which earns the "Made in the U.S." label, is a trivia process, as anyone who'd watched an iFixit tear-down video knows. It is dull, repetitive work that doesn't earn those who do it much money. Getting all hot and bothered about bringing it here is ridiculous.
We can contrast Trump with Ronald Reagan. In the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union became worried that they were falling behind in high tech. Reagan and George Shultz, his Secretary of State, took advantage of those fears. They showed Soviet leaders high-tech gear opened up to demonstrate that the components came from a host of countries. Russia, as a single and highly repressive country, they stressed, could not compete with innovations coming from almost the entire world. That argument led Soviet leaders to become less repressive and the result was the end of the Cold War.
Contrast that with Trump's chauvinistic nationalism, which is leading the world into a nasty trade war that's pitting almost every country on the planet against Trump with his crazy tariff 'dictate of the day.'
Waiting for the reality-defying explanation from @9secondkox2 about how this is “all part of the plan.”
Even if Apple thought they could move iPhone manufacturing to the US, it would take years. A 25% tariff now isn’t going to help with that.
Watch instead for some bluster followed by a reversal. Watch for Trump and his inner circle to buy Apple stock this afternoon and sell after the reversal.

So am I. I suspect he won't post a word.
When I read through your posts, I was fairly confident that there would be a response and it would be that "this is also part of the plan all along". And I wasn't surprised that it is exactly what happened. You cannot teach critical thinking skills through a discussion forum. I don't know the number of such people in US, but in my country (India), we have about 300 million of them. Replace "Trump" with "Modi", we have the exactly the same situation here. And he has been relected twice (no term limits here for PM, unlike US where max is 2 terms for one person as President), without any break. Just imagine what we are dealing with here!!!

My wife jokes that iPhones built in the US would require hand trucks to move them around and need car batteries to power them.
Now, it is up to Tim Cook how he will respond and drive the stock up again.
Amazon is also facing headwinds, but the stock has recovered so far. Walmart, too. Jensen Huang responded immediately and the US government removed the chip restriction to sell to China.
If Tim Cook still has no answer, he needs to step down.
Apple Investors must be frustrating now due to poor stock performance (downhill for 8 days in a row).
Tim Cook.. If you are reading this, you are cooking Apple and if you have no idea how to navigate, step down.

I'd rather see Trump step down, unfortunately his ego won't let it happen

Trump always ensures the best results, you just have to wait for the opposition to react.
